Red-capped Lark (Calandrella
cinerea saturatior),
Family Alaudidae |
Credit & Copyright: Dr. Bruce G.

Explanation: This is a common songbird of eastern and southern Africa, here on a precarious perch of an acacia with sword-like thorns. Heralding its territory is this male, displaying its characteristic red crest, brownish-gray back spotted with white, and rufous wing feathers just barely edged in white (more noticable in flight). Red-capped Larks
are denizens of highlands and, as with this subspecies, open plains and short
grasslands. I nabbed this image in Seregeti National Park of northern
Tanzania.
