Wave Cloud Iridescence
All photos taken by and (c) Bruce G. Marcot.
Wave Cloud Iridescence in the AndesIn August 2010, I was exploring the high Andes Mountains of northern Ecuador.
At over 13,000 feet elevation, I looked up, and saw some remarkable sky colors.
It was iridescence caused by sunlight refracting through very high-altitude wave clouds.In the following photo pairs, the photos on the left are the unretouched observation;
I enhanced the colors in the photos on the right to better display the array of colors.
The sun was off to the right of each photo.
(The green dot is a camera lens flare and not part of the observed colors.)Click on each photo for larger versions.
