Comets

Comet Hyakutake, March 1996.

Hyakutake had a strikingly long and narrow tail, as seen in this image.  The glare in the photo is the residual zodiacal light, as this was taken after sunset.  Photographed in the Oregon Coast Range.

This image shows the comet largely as it looked to the unaided eye ... with a single long, thin, fairly faint tail, and relatively bright head.

Comet Hale-Bopp, 1997.

A lonely traveller in the depths of space.

At its glory.  This nicely shows the brighter dust tail and the fainter bluish ion tail.

Above image that I computer-corrected for elongation of star trails due to time lapse.

A cold Oregon winter evening. Also see: http://www.sipe.com/halebopp/gallery/406.htm

Two strange entities in the sky -- Comet Hale-Bopp and a trail of airplane lights.

A few minutes later, another friend wadered by ... yet another set of airplane lights.

One of my personal favorites.  I took this on a cold blustery night in a conifer forest on an isolated mountain peak in the Oregon Coast Range with my friends Art and K2.  I'll never forget that night.

Another computer enhanced image of the coma and tail.
