Explanation: On the Pacific Slope of the Andes Mountains of Ecuador, in the area of the town of Mindo, occur several wonderful nature reserves, including one specifically for hummingbirds. Here, a tiny White-bellied Woodstar approaches a feeder. Growing
to only a little over 3 inches long, White-bellied
Woodstars fly more like bumblebees than birds. Although occurring
only along a narrow strip of mid-elevation Andean habitat, they are
nonetheless rated as Least
Concern by IUCN with secure populations.
