Striped Bush Squirrel (Paraxerus
flavovittis), Family Sciuridae |

Explanation: This is a purely east African species ... striped bush squirrel, shown enjoying a morning morsel alongside the Rift Valley waterbody of Lake Bagoria, here in southern Kenya. Striped bush squirrels are noted by their obvious side stripe, but also by the indistinct white patch on the lower face, and the thin white stripes around the eyes ... as noted in this week's photo. These squirrels inhabit savannahs, woodlands, and thickets, and can be minor pests of agricultural lands as well. They seem to favor groves of sugar plum trees (Uapaca).
