Explanation: Well, I wasn't wrong. Here sits a huge tail ... with a yellow bill. This is the rather massive Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, denizen of woodlands and forest edges, that I spotted during a long steep hike along the Taktsang Trail up to Tiger's Nest (Taktsang) Monastery in far western Bhutan northwest of the town of Paro. This bird species is found narrowly distributed along a wide swath of the Himalayan Mountains ranging from northeastern Pakistan, through India, and into Bhutan, with isolated populations in parts of Myanmar and northern Vietnam. Populations, though, seem stable and are rated by IUCN as Least Concern, yet total population sizes are unknown. |
