Explanation: The eagle of the royal park! This is a Grey-headed Fish Eagle, at home here in Royal Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal. Yes, fish eagles eat fish. This species is in the same genus as the North American Bald Eagle, also a fish-eater. Their distribution is scattered throughout south and southeast Asia through Indonesia. Here in Nepal, they are at nearly their northernmost edge of their range. Grey-headed Fish Eagles are rated by IUCN as Near Threatened. Threats include pollution, diversion of fish-bearing water bodies, and other human activities. |
