Slaty Skimmer, Wetlands Predator

Slaty Skimmer (Libellula incesta), Family Libellulidae
Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA

Explanation:  Perched briefly on a bulrush stem in the heart of major wetlands complex is this Slaty Skimmer, a common predator of flying insects.

This species is fairly widespread in the eastern U.S. and southeast Canada, and inhabits a variety of water habitats and is somewhat tolerant of polluted conditions.  However, it can still serve as a indicator species of habitat conditions.  Being fairly common, widespread, and easy to observe lends this species to being observed and reported by amateur and professional "dragon(fly)-hunters" alike.
