Explanation: Last week, we were on an elephant-back safari in the remote center of Corbett National Park in northern India, in river grasslands at dawn, in search of a Bengal tigress heard roaring during the night. Crossing the Ramganga River floodplain, our lead mahut spots a pugmark (track) in the mud ... fresh sign that she was recently this way. At last our search is fulfilled, and for but a brief moment, we catch sight of the magnificent cat. She dashes across open ground in a flash, and in a moment dissolves back into the elephant grass. Our elephant mounts surround the spot where she vanished, but somehow she slips away.
Later, finally back at camp, we add our sighting to the park's records:
