Now who made this hole? The Abert's squirrel did, digging for truffles (underground fungi), an important part of their diet.
The squirrel may be important for dispersing spores of truffles throughout the forest.
These diggings are characteristic of Abert's squirrels in these forests, and a sign of active, feeding individuals nearby. Usually, Abert's squirrels are aboreal but will come down to dig for food.
